Bailey Zappe Should Be QB1
It is starting to look like there will be a quarterback competition in New England. Some are saying Mac Jones is a system quarterback, some are me. It looks like New England has drafted back to back rookie of the year quarterbacks, first with Mac Jones and now with Bailey Zappe. Now some are saying if a 9-5 office worker went out there against the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns, they would put up those numbers too and they are probably right. We have seen this before and there are 2 instances.
New England has been known to put out system quarterbacks. Tom Brady has gotten hurt in the past and when back up quarterbacks got in, they simply ball out. Leading them to sign big contracts to start on other teams. Jimmy Garoppolo has probably been the most successful to do this as he lead a 49ers team to the Super Bowl even if he did get carried by his defense. Jacoby Brissett is still starting to this day in the NFL so he has to be doing something right. Probably the most forgot Patriots quarterback, Ryan Mallet simply did not work out when he left the Patriots. And of course Matt Cassel being trade to the Chiefs. We have seen this happen before.
The other time we have seen this is Tom Brady and Drew Bledsoe. Bledsoe got hurt in 2021 and a rookie took over with never looking back. Now I'm not saying Bailey Zappe is Tom Brady, but the Patriots have to be real Zappe with his play. Sorry had to say the Zappe joke but this dude is no joke.
The rookie out of Western Kentucky has has stats in 2 games to separate himself from other rookies across the NFL. Zappe is only one rookie QB in the Super Bowl era to win and post a 100+ Passer Rating in each of his first two starts. Good Morning Football put out a great graphic comparing the 2 here below.
